Step 1: Determine Visitor Category

The Visitor agreement procedures depend on the purpose of the visit, as described in detail under the Additional Information by Visitor Category section below. Academic Visitors will fall into one of three categories:

Category 1

Short-term, non-laboratory visits lasting less than 14 days

Category 2

Long-term, non-laboratory visits lasting more than 14 days

Category 3

Visits of any length that involve laboratory or clinically based research

Please consult the Academic Visitor Eligibility section on the Visitor Process Overview page in order to address any questions about Visitor eligibility, particularly as they relate to University of Pittsburgh affiliation and status, Visitors from Carnegie Mellon University, on-campus requirements for conducting Visitor activities, and the relationship between the University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

Please contact the Visitor Liaison for assistance if your Visitor situation does not appear to fit into one of the categories listed above or if you have any other questions.

Additional Information by Visitor Category

Category 1: Brief Visits

A visit to any University of Pittsburgh campus that:

  1. does not exceed 14 calendar days in duration, and
  2. will not involve use of a laboratory or clinical space.

Brief visits can include a speaking engagement or similar activity such as a guest lecturer, presenter, debate participant, or panel participant as well as on-campus scholarship or research activities as long as they remain within the defined parameters of a brief visit. Brief visits may also include escorted laboratory tours if the Visitor does not conduct laboratory research or operate laboratory equipment during the tour.

Category 2 should be chosen for visits that will likely involve access to or creation of University intellectual property. Any visit involving use of a laboratory, clinical space, or other high-risk activities will fall into Category 3.

Category 2: Scholarship/Research Visitors

A visit to any University of Pittsburgh campus that will include on-campus scholarship or research that:

  1. will extend beyond 14 calendar days in duration, and
  2. will not involve use of a laboratory or clinical space.

Category 2 should be chosen for visits that will likely involve access to or creation of University intellectual property. Any visit involving use of a laboratory, clinical space, or other high-risk activities will fall into Category 3.

Category 3: Activities Involving Laboratory and Clinical Use

A visit to a University of Pittsburgh campus that includes use of a laboratory or clinical space. In this category, the length of the visit and the primary purpose of the visit do not matter: Any visit involving use of a laboratory or clinical space will place the Visitor under Category 3.

Laboratory means University of Pittsburgh-owned or controlled wet or dry laboratories and other locations that allow for controlled experimentation or other high-risk activities involving certain hazards (for example, mechanical or electrical hazards, use of chemicals, or biological agents) or any similar University-directed activities in UPMC-controlled areas. Laboratory includes experimental social and human science (ESHS) research and studio-based research practice. This definition does not include computing facilities for solely computing purposes or environments that are available for general use by the Visitor.

High-risk Activities involve an agent, condition, or activity (e.g., toxic substances; infectious agents; flammable, explosive, or radioactive materials; moving machinery; extreme temperatures; lasers; strong magnetic fields; high voltage; or animals) that, if left uncontrolled, can result in an injury, illness, loss of property, or damage to the environment.

Clinical Space is an area used to provide diagnosis, consultation, treatment, or other services to patients in the Schools of the Health Sciences. These areas include, but are not limited to, examination rooms, testing rooms, consultation rooms, and holding areas. Relevant clinical space also can be located in UPMC facilities, when this space is used for University of Pittsburgh directed research and other activities.
